The President nominated Peter Oppenheim to serve as Assistant Secretary of Education for Legislation and Congressional Affairs. Oppenheim currently serves as the Education Policy Director and Counsel for the majority staff of the Senate HELP Committee and was previously an aide for Senator Alexander (TN).
The Department of Education hired Adam Kissel to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs. Kissel was previously employed at the Koch Foundation and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.
Hanna Skandera, New Mexico Secretary of Education, announced her resignation from the position at the end of this month.
Department of Education News:
Education Secretary DeVos announced during a hearing this week that the Department is on track to begin restoring year-round Pell grants effective July 1.
The Department posted a notice for public comment in the Federal Register regarding a study of weighted student funding and school-based systems. The document is open for public comment until August 7, 2017.

Achieve released the “Next Generation Science Standards District Implementation Workbook”.
Chiefs for Change released a policy paper titled “The Case for Teacher Leaders: Elevating the Teaching Profession and Sustaining Equity and Excellence”.
The National Institute for Early Education Research released a report titled “The State of Preschool 2016”.
The Brookings Institution released a report titled “How is Policy Affecting Classroom Instruction”.
The Fordham Institute released a report titled “Interdistrict Open Enrollment in Ohio: Participation and Student Outcomes”.
The Learning Policy Institute released a report titled “Effective Teacher Professional Development”.
The National Council on Teacher Quality released a guide titled “ESSA Educator Equity: Best Practices Guide”.
